et’s be real—some days, the hardest part of working out is just showing up. The couch is comfy, Netflix is calling, and suddenly, cleaning out the junk drawer feels urgent. But you know what makes all the difference? A workout buddy.
Why Flying Solo Can Be Tough
Working out alone is fine—until motivation dips, accountability disappears, and suddenly, you’re “accidentally” skipping workouts. Without a little external push, it’s easy to let life (or laziness) get in the way.
The Buddy System = Built-in Motivation
A solid workout partner can:
✅ Keep you accountable (Harder to bail when someone’s expecting you.)
✅ Push you harder (A little friendly competition never hurt.)
✅ Make it fun (Because burpees are slightly less awful with company.)
My Experience with a Workout Crew
Back in 2016, I trained with a group of buddies, and looking back, I now realize that was the best shape I’ve ever been in. We hit the gym at 5:30 AM, five days a week, for 90-minute sessions. I had a group of them just in case one backed out. And I’m not a morning person by nature, so it helped knowing I was the one with the key—if I didn’t show up, they’d be stuck outside, and I’d never hear the end of it.
But honestly, what I looked forward to just as much as the workouts was the conversation and camaraderie. It was a great group of guys, and those early mornings built friendships that lasted beyond the gym.
Since COVID, I got away from those early morning sessions, but I’ve recently revived them and recruited a new crew to join me. Hoping to keep it going for as long as I can.
How to Find the Right Workout Partner
Not all workout buddies are created equal. Here’s how to find the right one:
- Match Your Goals – If you want to get stronger, find someone who’s down to lift. If endurance is your thing, partner with someone who loves to run. You want to complement each other’s fitness journey.
- Energy Matters – You don’t need a drill sergeant, but you also don’t want someone who flakes or complains. Look for someone positive and committed.
- Same-ish Schedule – If they love 5 AM workouts and you’re a night owl, it’s a no-go. Pick someone who fits your training times.
Take the Next Step
Finding the right workout buddy makes training easier, more effective, and—dare I say—actually fun. Plus, sticking with it means better results, faster.
