‘m excited to announce that on Saturday August 31st, we will host Brett Bartholomew, Bridging Sports Performance and Human Performance at Paradigm Sport. Brett discusses how cognitive and behavioral science research and studies can explain factors that improve and inhibit human performance both on the sports field and in your relationships as a parent, teacher, spouse/partner, manager, entrepreneur or coach. He also shares insights on how your personal experience, self-awareness and understanding of these human performance factors can help you develop trusting relationships and result in influencing positive outcomes.
I first met Brett back in 2011, when he was a performance coach at EXOS. I was new to training and was getting a lot of my education through the EXOS (formerly Athletes’ Performance) mentorship program. I remember observing one of Brett’s sessions and being completely impressed with his energy, knowledge and ability to relate to each of the athletes he worked with.
Brett and I had the honor of working with Luke Rockhold together in 2015, prior to Luke winning the UFC Middleweight Championship. It was a privilege to work with Brett and I’m excited to bring him to Santa Cruz so he can impart his wisdom on the personal trainers and strength & conditioning coaches in the Bay Area. If you’re an S&C coach, personal trainer, health and wellness professional in and around the Bay Area this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss!
SESSION TOPICS:
Bought In – Behavior-Based Approach to Engineering Outcomes
The success of influencing the attitudes and behaviors of others depends to a great extent on the specific types of behavior used to exert influence and the social, environmental and psychological variables which underpin reactions and perceptions. Coaching at its heart is a social endeavor that is less about “acts and facts” and more so about understanding the nuances of what drives those we are trying to lead. This session explores many of these variables and science-backed strategies that help coaches adapt to situations arising from the inherently unpredictable realm of human performance.
Create Optimal Coaching Environments – Addressing Learning Styles, Skill-Acquisition & Transfer
Are “learning styles” a farce? What are some key neural and social related differences that contribute to why adolescent athletes may perceive you as a coach, or your instructional practices, in an unfavorable manner? Coaches want to develop people/athletes who can make decisions and adapt to changing situations. If the desire is to maximize learning and performance outcomes, a coach must have a firm understanding of how one learns, how one teaches, what is being taught and the context in which it is being taught. This session explores many of the taken-for-granted practices in coaching and highlights how they can be improved.
Perception and Performance – Overcome the Dynamics of Distracting Gimmicks
We live in what is, without a doubt, one of the most unique periods in coaching; pretenders and charlatans are often able to infiltrate our minds everywhere through their use of social media and other attention hijacking gimmicks and scenarios. This session explores the science of human perception as it relates to what we pay attention to, what we value, and what we are really saying to others subconsciously, whether we know it or not. Participants will leave this session having a more concrete understanding of why our athletes repeatedly fall for fads and gimmicky training, and what we can do to change that.
